‘Te Deum Laudamus’ Concert to Mark 550 Years of Paulite Brothers at Skałka in Kraków
‘Te Deum Laudamus’ Concert to Mark 550 Years of Paulite Brothers at Skałka in Kraków
On 24 June 2022, the ceremonious concert ‘Te Deum Laudamus’ took place at the courtyard of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr, forming a part of the celebrations of 550 years of incessant presence of the Paulite Order in this unique place.
The programme included famous operatic pieces referencing sacral music (for example Te Deum from G. Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ or Regina Coeli from ‘P. Mascagni’s ‘Rustic Chivalry’), but also prayer-like excerpts, not related to the Catholic liturgy (among others ‘Casta Diva’ from V. Bellini’s ‘Norma’, ‘Va, Pensiero’ from G. Verdi’s ‘Nabucco’). Traditionally, during moments important for us, we listen to the music by Stanisław Moniuszko; that is why the repertoire also included Stefan’s famous aria from ‘The Haunted Manor’ and ‘After Vespers on Sunday’ from ‘Halka.’ The concert ended with the world première of ‘Ora Pro Nobis’ by a quartet of soloists, the choir and the orchestra - this is the transcription of ‘Etude in B Flat Minor’ by Karol Szymanowski prepared by the music director of our Theatre, Maestro Tomasz Tokarczyk.
The following soloists performed on stage: Monika Korybalska, Katarzyna Oleś-Blacha, Tomasz Kuk and Mikołaj Zalasiński. Other Choir artists who took part in the solo parts: Michał Błocki (tenor) sang the part of Góral in ‘After Vespers on Sunday’, while Jacek Wróbel (baritone) took part in the world première of ‘Ora Pro Nobis.’ The soloists were accompanied by the Opera Orchestra and Choir conducted by Tomasz Tokarczyk, while Agnieszka Draus was the mistress of ceremonies.
The Marshal of the Małopolska Province, Witold Kozłowski, the Kraków Metropolitan, Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski and General of the Paulite Order, Father Arnold Chrapkowski held honorary patronage of the event.
During the concert, the Paulite brothers received congratulations from: Secretary of State Minister Wojciech Kolarski (on behalf of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda), Mayor of Kraków, Professor Jacek Majchrowski, Deputy President of the Local Government Assembly of the Małopolska Province, Kazimierz Barczyk, Councillor of the Małopolska Province, Chairwoman of the Pro-Social and Social Policy, Marta Mordarska, Councillor of the Małopolska Province Małgorzata Radwan-Ballada and Director of the Department of Culture and National Heritage of the Marshal Office of the Małopolska Province, Monika Gubała.
