The Devils of Loudun in honour of Krzysztof Penderecki
On the first anniversary of death of Krzysztof Penderecki, an outstanding composer and conductor, his opera, recorded in 2014, will be screened in honour of the Maestro. The show will be available on March 29 at 6.30 pm on Play Kraków.
The Devils of Loudun is the first opera in Krzysztof Penderecki's output, inspired by Aldous Huxley's novel The Devils of Loudun and John Whiting's drama The Devils. It has enjoyed constant interest of directors since its first staging in Hamburg in 1969. It is a work “stretched between a liturgical rite, mystery play, oratorio, musical drama and contemporary Expressionist theatre” says Daniel Cichy.
The libretto created by the composer addresses possession, the madness of fanaticism, political ambitions and erotic passions. “This opera has had the most performances of the contemporary operas. There were protests by the Church and bishops in many countries, but never in Poland” recalled Penderecki.
The premiere of the play, directed by Laco Adamik took place on 13th December 2008, during the ceremonial opening of the new seat of the Krakow Opera.
The Devils of Loudun is the composer's third opera staged in Krakow after such works as Ubu the King (1993) and The Black Mask (1998).
We invite you to watch the recording on Play Kraków
