Bolesław Pawlus was an outstanding operatic singer. He was born on 12 December 1929 in Kraków. He made his début at the stage of the Kraków Philharmonic as a singer in 1953. Later, Pawlus worked for the Kraków Music Theatre which nowadays operates as the Kraków Opera. His roles of Jontek in Moniuszko’s “Halka”, Canio in Ruggero Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci”, Don Jose in Georges Bizet's “Carmen”, Gerald in Leo Delibes’ “Lakme”, Rinuccio in Giacomo Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”, Stefan in Moniuszko’s “The Haunted Manor” and Pinkerton in Giacomo Puccini's “Madame Butterfly” went down in history.
In 1964, after eight seasons at the Kraków’s stage, he became a scholarship holder of the Italian government and resident at one of the most famous operatic stages in the world ˗ Milanese La Scala. After returning to Poland, Pawlus continued his professional career at the operatic stages in Poland, in particular at the National Theatre of the National Opera in Warsaw and the Silesian Opera in Bytom. After the end of his professional career, he lived in Kraków, taking active part in the music life of the city and offering his advice as a teacher to young generations and practitioners of the difficult vocal art.
