The Barber of Seville on-line!
G. Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” is an opera buffa considered the unattainable model of the genre. It relies on the comedy of Pierre Beaumarchais bearing the same title. The performance directed by Jerzy Stuhr will be available on-line from 8 May
“The Barber of Seville” by G. Rossini is the best known and beloved work of the Italian composer, which comprises beautiful music, excellent scenario and “inexhaustible resources of theatrical humour” as noted by Piotr Kamiński in the book entitled “Tysiąc i jedna opera”. The opera’s libretto is an adaptation of Pierre Beaumarchais’ comedy with the same title, which tells the story of a love-related intrigue and money greed.
Tomasz Tokarczyk was the music director for G. Rossini’s opera; it was directed by excellent theatre and film actor, director and teacher, Jerzy Stuhr. “The plot of “The Barber of Seville” is greatly complex, you need a lot of imagination to follow the adventures of the characters. I plucked it out from the epoch. I was not interested in a staging set in Rossini’s time or its contemporary version,” admits the director.
The list of producers features important names from the world of fashion and theatre. Costumes for the performance were prepared by Joanna Klimas, a well-known and valued fashion designer who services such great directors as Mariusz Treliński and Tomasz Konina. Katarzyna Łuszczyk, a regular assistant of Krzysztof Warlikowski, was the light designer.
Jerzy Stuhr had his début as the director in the music theatre in Kraków. His rendition of “Don Pasquale” by G. Donizetti or the recently staged Mozart’s opera, “Cosi fan tutte”, enjoy unwavering popularity.
“The Barber of Seville” premièred in 2019 in the Kraków Opera.
“The Barber of Seville” directed by Jerzy Stuhr (première recording) at Play Kraków from 6.30 p.m. on 8 May to 6.30 p.m. on 9 May.
